As a SAFe Program Consultant Trainer (SPCT) and an Organization and Relationship System Certified Coach (ORSCC), I tend to look at organizational change from the perspective of ‘How can the changes to the system be introduced and supported in such a way that they are sustainable and meaningful.’
Because each environment is unique, I leverage the Scaled Agile Framework as a set of ‘good practices’ to help inform the system vs. an unyielding template to apply. I strive to maintain the principle of ‘simplicity – the art of maximizing the amount of work not done’. In my experience, SAFe often times provides clarity on roles, ceremonies, principles and practices that many traditional organizations need to continue on their Lean | Agile evolution. This structure can be leveraged to support the culture as it evolves.
I typically focus my energy helping leadership understand ‘what’ they must do and coaching them ‘how’ to do it. Simply teaching patterns and models to those involved is never enough. It is critical that people know what they are working towards and why it is important. The path is constantly being refined and the travelers are every maturing. In order to create a resilient team of teams, leaderships must engage teams’ hearts, minds, intelligence and imaginations. Failing to do so will most likely lead an organization someplace short of where they need to be to remain relevant.
I don’t have the answers, and you should really question anyone that says they do. I do have a breadth and depth of knowledge and experiences that can help channel, distill, and grow the inherent voice of the system. By acting as more of a partner-sherpa vs. consultant-guide I have found my true calling; unlocking the intrinsic intelligence, passion and energy of the systems I work with and supporting them on their journey.
