Scaling to SAFe @ NSF: A Retrospective on Using SAFe to Improve Application Development at NSF (National Sciences Foundation)

Witness a candid retrospective of NSF’s 3 year journey transforming the legacy waterfall process and culture into a unified release train utilizing the Scaled Agile Framework. NSF Federal and Contract employees will reflect on the accomplishments, pitfalls, and lessons learned they have gained from their experiences expanding the NSF process from 1 agile team to an entire portfolio of applications using SAFe. NSF uses SAFe to accelerate IT Modernization as an organization, collaborate across teams to reduce risk, and deliver higher quality software more frequently.

Learning Objectives and Key Takeaways:

  • How to (or how not to) implement SAFe and agile organically in a Federal organization
  • The different challenges encountered transforming teams from waterfall to agile on new development and legacy O&M applications
  • How to pull in other IT service areas, such as Infrastructure and Security, that are not operating in an agile methodology
